Have some shitty pictures of the event tonight! And a really cool story..
I didn’t win tickets to the Sherlock event, but since I live in NYC, I decided that I would stop by the venue anyway and see what the situation was. I work one stop up on the express from the theatre anyway, so I didn’t see the harm. Through ways and means, I obtained the address over the weekend and ducked out of work an hour early to head down there.
When I got there, I got in line and, long story short, most of the people ahead of me in the standby line got to go inside. There were probably about 25 or 30 of us left out there when they said all the seats were taken and that was that. Then, they came back out and said there were 6 seats left and of course, all semblance of order vanished and we all made a break for the door. No luck on my part. But from my position now directly in front of the glass door, I could see the woman there say that there was one seat left. Desperately, I gestured that I was there alone and I was a “one person” and for a moment, they looked around at us all begging there and finally, the guy on the other side pointed at me and beckoned me through.
I always say I don’t believe in luck, but MY GOD was that lucky. I thanked him profusely as I walked down the stairs and to the theatre with him. I still can’t believe it. I got the very last seat.
By the time I got in there, the lights were out and the into was starting. I actually got a great seat, closer to the front with a nice vantage point for the stage (and an aisle seat at that!). Watching the preview of “A Scandal” was so fun with everyone laughing at the right bits and screaming and just going crazy. To be honest, I was so wired up and still shaking from getting to go in and then reminding myself that Benedict was there that I would have probably nervously laughed at anything.
So afterward, the Q&A, which you all saw streamed. It was great! I didn’t ask a question, but I really enjoyed hearing other people’s. Benedict onstage was just.. I mean, he looks almost the same as in photos but more EVERYTHNG. More striking, more ethereal, more insanely gorgeous, especially closeup. It’s like he’s not even real.
After that - the best part! - the autograph signing! We were divided into two lines: one for Benedict and one for Stephen and Sue. Natch, I booked it to the Benedict line and got a great spot. I’d printed out a lovely 5x7 for him to sign earlier and had it eagerly waiting. When he came into the room, I swear to God my heart stopped. He really is just, insanely beautiful and kind of like a painting in some ways, especially with his tanned skin. And his eyes - there’s just no way to describe them. No picture I’ve ever come across has done them justice. They are blue blue blue, ice blue and piercing but soft at the same time. Kill me they’re fucking stunning. OH and he smells SO FUCKING GOOD. As he walked past me, his cologne lingered behind and it was incredible. UGH.
When my turn came to approach him, I quickly handed my camera off to a woman standing behind me in like and walked up to him. Now, while I was standing in line watching him with others, I was super nervous. I mean, I’m not usually nervous around celebrities at all, but it’s BENEDICT FUCKING CUMBERBATCH. But he was being completely gracious, taking his time with everyone and talking and signing and posing for photos, like he had all the time in the world. And I mean EVERYONE. The staff was trying to hurry us along (and I don’t blame them) but Benedict didn’t rush, and that was incredible.
So anyway, I go up to him and say “hi!” and he said “hello!” and then I died. But really. I handed him the photo and I think right after that, we took the photo and HE PUT HIS FUCKING ARM AROUND MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE AND I PUT MY ARM AROUND HIMMMMMMMMMMMM. fdskjlfs Then, like I said before, he looked at the photo I’d brought and said he hadn’t seen it. I asked him if he liked it and he said he did and asked where it was from. I said I didn’t know, haha, I’d gotten it offline. (My mind left me at the moment.)
I thanked him for doing the signing and the event, and told him he must be exhausted from traveling and work. He said he was a bit tired, but he really really wanted to do the event because “you really deserve it for being such great fans” and for being so supportive. Just so lovely of him to say that. And so I told him that he was an incredible actor and a beautiful person all the way around and how refreshing it was to have someone in the business be just absolutely wonderful and he seemed really touched by that and thanked me. It was so funny because as nervous as I was before I spoke with him, when we talked, my nerves instantly went away. When you speak with Benedict, it’s instantly comfortable, like you’re pals. Obviously, in a minute or two your convo isn’t going to be super deep and meaningful, but it was just the vibe.
Then I think I went to walk away and I asked if I could shake his hand to which he replied “of course!” and whilst doing this (I HAD TO) I said, “by the way, Starter for 10 is awesome.” And he LOL’d and said “Yes! I love Watts!”
And then I died for real.
But really, what a wonderful wonderful human being. I think he’s probably the nicest celebrity I’ve ever met, or at the very least in my top two or three. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to meet him and I really hope that everyone else that went tonight enjoyed themselves and had a blast and got to speak with him and Moffat.
And I’m super exhausted, so if any of that didn’t make sense or sounds stupid, SORRAH. I’ll attempt sleep and then take another look at it in the morning.
BUT HOLY FUCK I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS REALLY HAPPENEDDDDDDD.
aw guise just read this story because it is lovely c: so happy when people get to meet the people they admire :’D
